In 2021 I was commissioned to create a set of 12 pen and ink symbolic images of the Stations of the Cross. I had a great time doing research on the stations, coming up with symbolic images, creating a consistent style that was both mysterious and evocative. I decided to make the set a limited edition art piece. There are three sizes of prints available with 5” x 7” having the most at 15 editions, and 8.5” x 11’ and 17” x 22” having only 5 editions each. These 12 prints in the set are prints of my original hand drawn pen and ink work. Each set is printed on archival fine art 300 lb. rag bright paper and using archival ink.
Each image is signed on the back.
Each set is printed by Sweetlight Gallery in Crookston, MN.
A little about the images: The images are designed to be multi layered with meaning. Each image has a neo-traditional tattoo theme. The leaves and flower buds or stems are an organic and life-giving presence in each image and being both in shadow and light they represent wholeness. The triple upward dripping, psychedelic lines around each of the images represent the reality that things are not what they seem or rather, things are much more than they seem. It’s like that fantastic parable of the blind people touching different parts of an animal they know nothing about, the elephant. One blind person feels the leg and says it’s like a tree, another feels the ear and says it’s a fan, another pounds the stomach and says no, it’s like a wall, it’s a snake as another holds the trunk, the tail seems to be a rope to another blind seeker…. Yes, the elephant is all those things and yet all those things are connected. All those separate and independent objects that seem to have nothing in common are actually one thing. What if we slowly (or suddenly) realized we were seeing the world upside down? What if we realized we were seeing the world through a filter or colored glasses? What if nothing was separated. What if every seemingly different thing was the one thing? These images of the stations of the cross are designed to be a meditation on ourselves. They are a mirror into our own heart and mind. Take time to consider, explore, see, hear what they whisper, experience what arises. And then, look again, feel once more, listen deeply because the snake, the wall, the fan, the tree, the rope we are so sure of is only the surface...Thanks for looking!
